Fall Snowmobile Preseason Inspection:
-
A fall preseason inspection is really a
mandatory service before you put your sled into service when the
snow flies. The only question is if you prefer to do it
yourself or let Petrie Motorsports' certified mechanics perform the
service. If you refer to your owners manual you will find a
recommended service chart that outlines what needs to be done and
how often. At Petrie Motorsports we have two levels of fall
service - "A" and "B".
The $150 "A" service is a basic inspection of all the sleds
major components, lube the front and rear suspensions, new spark plugs,
change the chaincase oil, and give the sled a general check-up.
This service is a check and fix as needed program (things like runner hyfax,
brake pads, carbides, etc. are checked and replaced if needed at extra
cost).
The "B" service is a thorough sled maintenance program that
takes 4-5 hours to complete. The charge is $325 for twins and $400 for
triples plus parts. The main parts of this service are three items: 1)
Clean carbs - disassemble, clean, reassemble, and synchronize 2)
Remove and clean RAVE valves, remove all carbon and reinstall with new
gaskets 3) Clean clutches - remove both clutches, disassemble, clean
and inspect for any worn or out of spec parts, reassemble, install and align
clutches. In addition to these three main items we also perform all of
the items on the "A" service and all components are checked and replaced as
needed. Extra parts or repairs needed are at additional cost as well
as items like frozen up cams in the secondary clutch (caused by not doing an
annual inspection)! Older sleds and certain models (PRS chassis in
particular) may cost more.
We recommend the "B" service to keep your sled at its peek
performance and to prevent any problems during the riding season. All
it takes is a dirty carb to cause a piston burn down and then the $260 for
the fall service will look cheap!

To insure that your sled will be ready for
you in the fall there are a few essential steps you need to perform:
-
1) Wash and clean the sled to remove
any salt residue and dirt.
-
2) Lubricate and grease the chassis
and suspension. Pay particular attention to rear suspension
shafts and steering joints. Grease them until you see grease
starting to come out the ends and use a spray lubricant on all
steering ball joints. Don't forget the grease zerk below the
secondary clutch, this lubricates the left side drive axle bearing
and is worked hard all season long and often neglected.
-
3) Use a fuel stabilizer in the fuel
tank to keep the fuel conditioned. You need to either drain
the carbs or run the sled long enough to get the fuel stabilizer
into the carbs. This may require running the sled for up to 15
minutes at idle to thoroughly circulate the fuel (we recommend
pulling the float bowl drain and drain all the fuel out of the carbs
to prevent varnishing of the carb).
-
4) Fog the motor with fogging oil.
With the motor running spray fogging oil in the carbs until the
engine dies. Remove the spark plugs and spray oil in the top
of each cylinder. Replace the plugs and turn the motor over by
hand a few times to circulate the oil.
-
5) If your sled is equipped with a
battery it should be disconnected and it is best to remove it from
the sled and put it on an automatic trickle charger to maintain the
charge. It is also a good idea to plug the exhaust pipe to
prevent rodents or insects from getting in. It is best to
suspend the sled to remove the load from the springs and shocks,
however, this is not essential.
6) Spray down
the engine compartment with a silicone lubricant like Bombardier Lube to
prevent rust or seized parts.
-
7) You may also want to
renew your chaincase oil in the spring, we normally do that in the
fall when prepping the sled for winter, but spring is just fine
also. The main thing is just to be sure it gets changed at
least once a year with normal mileage.
-
If all of this sounds like it is more than
you care to do or if you don't want to have your own supply of lubes
and cleaners, then that is where the service techs at Petrie
Motorsports come in. We can do this complete procedure for you
and it will only cost you $50 plus parts (w/o chaincase). If
you need any other repairs or service we can take care of it all at
the same time. Give your sled a break - put it away right this
year and you will be ahead of the game next fall!
